Employment, Marriage and Economic Security (NHMRC) 3 of 4
This third conference will review research on the interconnections between employment, marriage and economic security and outline a preliminary agenda for programs, policy and further research.
As new strategies are being developed to help encourage low income men and women--many of whom are already parents --to obtain more stable and better paying jobs. However these efforts do not take into account the individual's relationship context or family responsibilities. At the same time healthy marriage programs are teaching low-income couples skills and attitudes to help strengthen their relationship and more effectively parent their children, but seldom focus no improving the families' employment economic situation. The Wingspread conference will review research and program experience to date and explore whether combing these strategies could bring increased economic success to low-income families.

A growing body of research indicates there are strong effects of marital status and marital quality on health outcomes across the life cycle.
