How to Propose a Conference

Step 1. Letter of Inquiry

Submit a one- to two-page letter that includes:

  • A clear statement of purpose;
  • A draft agenda;
  • The identification of key participants; and
  • An estimated budget and schedule.

The letter should describe how the conference will:

  • Enhance collaboration and community;
  • Include diverse opinions and perspectives;
  • Identify solutions; and
  • Result in action.

Step 2. Formal Proposal

Following our review of your inquiry, you will receive a response informing you whether or not to proceed with a formal proposal.

The appropriate program officer may invite a formal proposal that should include:

  • A concise statement of purpose;
  • A description of the issue(s) the conference will address, the manner in which this will be addressed, why the issue is important (briefly), and the anticipated results;
  • An action plan, including post-conference efforts to ensure dissemination and results;
  • Complete identification of convening and co-sponsoring organizations;
  • The conference format (plenary/break-out meetings, working meeting, conference series, etc.);
  • The proposed dates and duration of the conference;
  • The estimated number and identity of participants;
  • The support sought from The Johnson Foundation;
  • Sources of additional support, where required; and
  • 501 (c)(3) and 509 (a) (1), (2), or (3) status documentation.
