Green Seal Certification

The Johnson Foundation achieved GS33 Green Seal Certification for lodging facilities at the Gold Level in 2008.

Currently, the Foundation is the only Gold Level property in the U.S.

Founded in 1989, Green Seal provides science-based environmental certification standards. The goal of Green Seal's standards is to identify sustainability leadership performance levels and practices for products and services. The process used to achieve this goal is based on the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards for environmental labeling programs, ISO 14020 and 14024 - international standards for ecolabelling. Product or service categories are evaluated using a life-cycle approach to ensure that all significant environmental impacts are considered in the development of a standard, from raw materials extraction through manufacturing to use and disposal. Such an evaluation involves thorough, state-of-the-art scientific evaluations using internationally accepted methodologies.

Since 1995, Green Seal has partnered with the lodging industry, the nation's second largest employer, to promote environmentally responsible products and practices within lodging properties. Green Seal's campaign to inform the nearly 54,000 U.S. hotels and motels focuses on how environmental efforts both improve the bottom line and benefit the environment.
