Words from John, a Hero for Health:

In terms of the criminal justice system, mental health is a highly complex issue with many different layers to consider. While it is a top priority to maintain the privacy of those with mental health diagnoses, we also want to ensure that these individuals receive the proper treatment and care they need.

There are many actions we can take to build toward a healthy, productive future for our children. Too many of the juveniles I see in the court system struggle with undiagnosed or untreated mental health challenges. By the time young people get to me, it is much more difficult to lead them away from their current path. If we train our police officers and community members to recognize signs of mental health issues, these young people will have a better chance at receiving the treatment they really need.

Children, especially those going through the court system, require strong support systems to guide them. Parents often don’t know where to turn for help with their children. The members of the Collaborative have an opportunity here to play a major role in educating the public on resources available to them. Knowledge is one of our best weapons as we strive toward a community of wellness.

We can also push for advocates to assist families in making sure the child sticks with their treatment. The more we add to our team of care providers, the better prepared our children will be to excel in life.

The Collaborative truly makes a great asset to the Racine community as we work toward our shared goals in addressing children’s mental health needs. I remain optimistic that, together, we will succeed in creating a brighter future for our children.
