Heroes for Health: Liz Powell

This spotlight series is designed to profile members of the Racine Collaborative for Children’s Mental Health. Over the coming months, the series will feature individual Collaborative members, each of whom is integral to the group’s efforts to forge stronger connections and establish new approaches to strengthen the social and emotional development of our children.

This series is an opportunity to highlight and recognize the diverse individuals, services and resources available to the Racine community.

About the Racine Community Foundation: The Racine Community Foundation was established in 1975 by a small group of community leaders who recognized the need for an organization that could receive and manage funds from charitable individuals, businesses and organizations in order to maximize efforts to serve the needs of the community. The Foundation has continued to expand its support of non-profits that work to improve the lives of our citizens through initiatives in community development, health, education, human services, arts and culture and environmental programs and projects.

Words from Liz, a Hero for Health:

Racine has a robust volunteer community committed to helping all of our children develop the life skills they need to excel in their education, graduate and grow into successful young adults. I’m honored to engage each day with so many passionate individuals and community leaders. But there is still more we can do.

Unaware of the services available in our community to support them, too many parents do not seek mental health assistance for themselves or their children. For others, there is still far too much stigma associated with reaching out for help. And navigating the health system alone can be incredibly overwhelming. As a result, too many children and families are suffering and coping alone. We must – and can – change this dynamic.

Racine is fortunate to have The Johnson Foundation at Wingspread behind the Collaborative for Children’s Mental Health. Having the support of an organization of this magnitude gives us the leverage we need to engage the right partners at all levels and increase awareness in our community.

Everyone benefits when we succeed in getting children into a program of care where we can help them become successful men and women.

My hope is that as a result of the work of the Collaborative, we as a community, will have more awareness around the children in our community who are struggling with mental health issues and be in a stronger position to direct parents and families to the right resources.
