Young, Local Filmmakers Investigate Global Options for Clean, Affordable Water

One-eighth of the world’s population does not have access to clean, drinkable water. Three and a half million people die each year from water related diseases. Every 20 seconds, a child dies from drinking contaminated water. Despite all of this, the real tragedy is that this crisis is completely preventable. The technology exists today to successfully address this issue.

In the new documentary, The Balanced Equation, three young filmmakers from Racine, WI use their storytelling skills to showcase their journey to investigate and explore six unique point-of-use water filtration and chemical treatment systems being implemented in developing countries such as Kenya and the Dominican Republic. Their journey and story, while important to adults, inspires and empowers youth throughout the world.

The documentary introduces the high school educational unit , also called The Balanced Equation, developed by The Keystone Center in partnership with The Dow Chemical Company. This documentary informs students about the magnitude of the crisis and the relative simplicity of the solutions, while inspiring them to become active participants in global, sustainable solutions.

The Johnson Foundation recently hosted a screening of the documentary and provided the audience an opportunity to hear from the producers, Madison Richards, Sinclair Richards, Samantha Noll, and their advisor, Larry Jozwik. Watch the documentary to learn more about their journey.
